Education in Benue state

Benue is termed "the food basket of the nation". This is due to the fact that their major profession is farming and fishing.

To the children of Benue state, education is seen as a waste of time. The lackadaisical attitude of the children could be traced to government's negligence  and the parent's ignorance.

In the south-west, parents cannot afford to see their child(ren) not educated even if the environment of the school their children will attend is not conducive, it's  their belief that even if they(the parents) are stark illiterate, their children must not be in the same shoes with them but rather leave a far better life. Even those that are financially stable still believe  their child(ren) can be successful more than them if properly educated.

Government's approach towards education is at the lowest level in Benue.  No constant payment of teachers' salary let alone conducting impromptu visit to checkmate teachers' daily activities.

Even private schools in this side of the country can not stand government schools in the south-west nor east. The most brilliant student here in Benue is the dullest in other region of the country.

In Benue, school operates for 9-11 weeks in a term meanwhile out of those weeks the first 2-3weeks is considered as resting week immediately after the end of any vacation.

Second week of resumption.

Parents in Benue state prefer seeing their children with their school uniform on in their farm, helping in farm works rather than allowing them to go to school.

In most schools here, assembly is regarded as unnecessary since students or pupils will not resume to school till 8:30a.m-9:00a.m. A teacher can take a topic in mathematics for the whole of 6hours with no one to be able to do a classwork perfectly.

In a  class of 40 students/pupils hardly will you see ten(10) that can read fluently. What will you even expect from a school where female students tell male corpers "oga you are set today o, abi make i come your house make we do that thing?"

Schools where student will stand up immediately the closing bell jiggles and tell the teacher/corper "oga na tomorrow things o" as they move out of the class with the teacher/corper still standing in front of the chalkboard. Schools where pupils will tell you that the opposite of narrow is big road, or a school where pupils will tell you 7 seconds makes 1 minute!

Permanent teachers no longer come to teach but corpers instead. Without corpers students/pupils may come to school shouting and screaming all through till closing time.

For all this abnormalities who  is to be blamed if not for the government that has refused to pay the workers let alone inspecting one of the major sectors under their control, or parents who do not know the value of education. Why will they even know the value of education when the only language they understand is eat and multiply! They have forgotten that education is key to development, little wonder almost if not all their buildings, are erected from red soil, children of 13 years are proud to be mothers not even mentioning being a virgin.

Despite the fact that senator David Mark , popular artists 2face idibia, terry G, frank Edwards and some other dignitaries such as former aviation minister etc are from Benue state, the state cannot sneeze when even smaller states in the south-west are coughing.

If this state(Benue state) must grow, the government will need to spend at least half of the state allocation on just the education sector which will require a lot of sacrifice, if not, people in Benue will keep on migrating to other states that consider education as the only sure rout to success.
